RIP Sherri Thompson

On March 22, 2011 I recieved a message from Sherri Thompons mom Trisha, I had just driven over 1500 miles and put my head to rest on a couch. Within minutes my phone started rumbling like crazy, so of course I checked the messages, one after another asked me if I heard what happened. I had no clue what they were talking about until I came to Trisha message telling me that her little girl Sherri Thompson passed away just hours before.

It was a heart breaking message and I still didn't believe it after I read it, how could a 33 yr old woman that was in awesome shape just pass away so suddenly. There were no drugs involved, no foul play, it was was something that is called a Cardiac Dysrythmia. I had no clue what this was but so I had to find out and this is what it is defined as:

"Sometimes referred to as cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac dysrhythmia is the accurate medical term for an irregular or abnormal heart rate. Cardiac dysrhythmia occurs when the average adult heart rate falls below or rises above the normal range of 60 to 100 beats per minute.

Cardiac dysrhythmia can be life threatening.

When the heart rate drops below 60 beats per minute, this condition is known as bradycardia. Bradycardia is generally not a life threatening form of cardiac dysrhythmia, but it can cause aggravating symptoms. If symptoms of bradycardia are persistent, it may be treated by implanting a pacemaker.

The opposite spectrum of cardiac dysrhythmia is when the heart rate rises above 100 beats per minute. This condition is called tachycardia. Tachycardia occurs when the electrical impulses controlling the heartbeat become abnormally fast. Exercise, stress, adrenaline, and stimulant sources such as caffeine can cause tachycardia. Generally, tachycardia is not life threatening unless it becomes so fast it causes blood pressure to drop and interferes with the pumping action of the heart."

This is what happened to her, from what I gather it is something that can happen to athletes that have been training since there were young.

Its a scary thing that a person can be in awesome shape, doesn't drink nor smokes and this can happen.

The worse part of everything is that she was not only a Muay Thai Kickboxing Champion but she was such an inspiration to so many people, young and old.

I was and am very saddened by her passing as she was a part of my extended family, she will be forever missed but never forgotten.
